Orthodox Africa is pleased to introduce our newest adopted Orthodox mission on the African continent. The Annunciation of the Theotokos Orthodox Christian Mission and St John Chrysostom Farm and School in the village of Nakyaka in the Republic of Uganda. In 2003, this humble Orthodox Christian school was created with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Jonah of Kampala by Father Stephen Lunagula in Nakyaka out of the desire to promulgate the ancient Holy Orthodox Christian Church through education of the local children. The Annunciation of the Theotokos Orthodox Mission and St. John Chrysostom School and Farm is located in the rural village Nakyaka, ninety-one miles from the Ugandan capital city of Kampala.
The school began with twenty-two students and then rapidly grew to seventy-six students by the grace of God. From 2003 through 2013 the property grew thanks to the providence of God and the generosity of the school’s neighbours. By 2013, the school property grew to nine acres which provided them with enough space to begin to develop a proper Orthodox community. During the same period, Father Stephen with the help of God was able to find multiple benefactors from Greece who contributed to the construction of the new primary school buildings and eventually a Holy Orthodox Church where the divine services could be held for the benefit of the Orthodox community in Nakyaka. As time moved on and the school and mission of the Orthodox in Nakyaka grew many struggles arose including maintaining the financial needs required to operate a school, as well as properly providing for the most basic human needs such as clean water for the faithful to drink.
However, Father Stephen never lost faith in Christ and left his cares to the holy providence of God. As the holy scriptures tell us: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you, for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened (St. Matthew 7:7-8).” Father asked our most merciful Christ to care for his mission and he received an answer to his humble prayers by discovering our Orthodox Christian organization, Orthodox Africa. Father Stephen reached out to Orthodox Africa to see if they could assist this wonderful Orthodox mission in rural Uganda to stay open and properly care for the Orthodox community there.
It was then that he was contacted by Father Seraphim Holland who through the grace of God was able to get to know Father Stephen and eventually make a trip to Uganda to visit this holy community. Father Seraphim once arriving in Uganda was able to meet with and get to know Father Stephen and to discuss the goals and future plans for the Orthodox farm and school. Father Stephen informed Father Seraphim that his goal for the school was to create a self-sustaining Orthodox school, farm, and community, that can grow and flourish in Nakyaka. This selfless work and commitment to Christ and his Holy Orthodox Church are what Orthodox Africa looks for in adopting mission and for this reason, we are proud to include them in our growing fold of Orthodox Africa sponsored missions. May Christ our God bless the future work of the Orthodox Christians in Uganda and grant them peace, health, salvation, visitation, forgiveness for the remission of sins and life everlasting, amen.
